Eluveitie is een metalband uit Zwitserland. Ze kunnen worden omschreven als een heidense folkmetalband. De muziek van de band is traditionele, Keltische volksmuziek gecombineerd met melodieuze deathmetal. De band werd opgericht in 2002 en bestaat uit 8 mensen. Er wordt gezongen en gegrunt in het Engels en in het Gallisch. In de muziek staat de liefde voor de Helvetiaanse roots centraal. De naam Eluveitie betekent dan ook "Ik ben een Helvetiër". Helvetios

Na een korte intro in de vorm van “Prologue”, een mystiek verhaal verteld door een eveneens mystieke man, is het gedaan met de rust, althans voor het grootste gedeelte van deze plaat. Titelnummer “Helvetios” zet meteen vrij groot in; met veel folk gerichte instrumenten en een zangeres, maar dit blijkt slechts een intro want daarop volgt dan vooral veel scream en grunt. En al vrij snel is duidelijk dat deze plaat vooral hierdoor wordt beïnvloed. De meeste nummers hebben als kern dat typische deathmetal geluid met als tegenwicht fluiten,violen en andere folk-instrumenten. Hoogtepunt van dit album vind ik “Scorched Earth” , de dromerige ambiance wordt met een akelig sterke overtuiging gebracht. Prachtig! Het is bijna jammer dat je bruut uit je dagdroom wordt wakker geschud met “Meet The Enemy”. Deze nummers liggen hemelsbreed van elkaar verwijderd. En het is dus ergens wel knap dat deze band over zoveel veelzijdigheid kan beschikken.

Conclusie
Met Helvetios wordt het genre van folk metal toch enigszins omzeilt. Er wordt wel gebruik gemaakt van typische folk gerichte instrumenten en muzikale uitwerkingen, maar de nadruk wordt bij de meeste nummers vooral gelegd op deathmetal. Of dit een goede keuze is geweest, is vooral sterk afhankelijk van de luisteraar; waar zijn of haar voorkeur ligt. Het album was wellicht wat kleurrijker geworden wanneer er was gekozen voor meer afwisseling zoals bijv. bij het nummer “Scorched Earth”, dit is een aangename verrassing in het totale repertoire. Door meer af te wisselen in harde en zachtere nummers had Eluveitie wellicht meerdere soorten luisteraars vast weten te houden. En dat geldt met name voor de vocalen, die in mijn beleving te veel gericht zijn op het grunten, terwijl de band ook beschikt over een goede zangeres en zanger met clear vocals. Daar mag dan wel aan toe gevoegd worden dat binnen de nummers zelf wel voldoende afwisseling geboden wordt juist door de instrumenten.

Er kan gesproken worden van een veelzijdige groep muzikanten, die makkelijk in staat zijn om een plaat van hoog niveau af te leveren. Als je luistert naar de opbouw van de nummers, de intro’s of solo’s en zangtechnieken dan kun je daar onmogelijk omheen. Daarmee gezegd, is deze plaat dus zeker niet verkeerd. Maar de waardering zal voornamelijk bij de deathmetalheads hoog liggen.

Led by frontman Rob Carlyle on vocals and rhythm guitar, The Compulsions have until recently been a rotating line up of heavyweight rock ‘n’ roll talent, including members of The Patti Smith Group and Howlin’ Wolf/Muddy Waters band. At present, Carlyle has found a steady onstage groove with Guns N' Roses players Frank Ferrer on drums and Richard Fortus on lead guitar, who’ve both appeared on many Compulsions recordings, as well as New York Dolls/ex-Hanoi Rocks bassist Sami Yaffa. After several EP's and singles the New York based Compulsions strike back with their first full-length album, entitled “Beat The Devil”.

BEAT THE DEVIL

 

Opener “Hired Gun” can be described as 70’s rock with a punky edge! The vocals have a sleazy aftertaste so an obvious comparison with The New York Dolls comes to mind. The song structure is kept simple but we’re treated with a real guitar explosion at the end. The speed shift up a few gears during the short “I Just Wanna Play Guitar”. This song surely gets the party started and you’ll start shakin’ with all available body parts when listening to this fast track. Effects on the vocals and the country rock style of guitar work hits your inner ear on the seductive “Dirty Woman Blues”. The guitars in the break will put an instant smile again on your face. It’s all love and peace when “Yer Too Good  Fa Me” starts! The guitar slowly works itself more in the picture on this long hypersensitive ballad. “Eat My Dust” is a short burst of adrenaline pumping ballsy guitar work with some crazy vocals and pounding drums.

“Ea$y Money” is the second ballad on the album. This one has a bluesy, mellow touch and some sleazy guitars will stick their head up. “Ya Never Got me Down” somehow reminds me a bit of the Black Crowes and you can’t stop stomping your feet to the beat! “She’s So Fuckin' Sexy” is a combination of dance keys, sleazy dirty vocals and an occasional guitar riff. The freaky solo spot gives this weird rather funky song an extra dimension. The groovy “I Was Right, You Were Wrong” contains some spicy riffs and has a true sing-a-long chorus. We visit an old cowboy ranch during the six minutes long “Shut Yer Hole”. The sound is even enhanced with some western inspired melodica. When you close your eyes, you’ll see the mounted bad ass cowboys pass before your eyes! Isn’t it strange what good music can do to you! So shut her hole and give this platter another spin and crack it up!

Conclusion:
Don’t expect tons of riffs and complex songs, because this album will bring you back to a time when making music was fun. The raw rock with references to sleaze and post punk will certainly light up your day. Besides the catchy build up of the songs, you’ll discover some excellent guitar work on it! And the vocals from Rob just smell like Rock N' Roll….so gimme, gimme, gimme more!!

A must buy for lovers of sleaze rock and fans of New York Dolls, Guns N' Roses and old school giants like the Rolling Stones.

Fate werd in 1984 opgericht door Hank Sherman (die net Mercyful Fate had verlaten), Jeff Limbo, Bob Lance en Pete Steiner. Groot was de verbazing van menig metalfan dat het Fate geluid dicht aanleunde bij melodic rock en zelfs AOR. Dit werd vooral bevestigd met het supergladde, maar voortreffelijke “A Matter Of Attitude” album. Daarna verliet Hank de band en in 1990 kwam het nieuwe Zweedse gitaarwonder Mattias “IA” Eklundh de band vervoegen en werd het gitaargedreven “Scratch N Sniff” opgenomen. Ondanks dit fantastisch album wou het niet vlotten voor Fate en gooide men in 1993 de handdoek in de ring. Na een reunie op een Duits festival kwam Fate terug met het album “V”. Maar ook dit was geen lang leven beschoren en opnieuw bleef het succes uit. Nu slaat de band keihard terug met een nieuwe bezetting en een nieuw album “Ghosts From The Past”.

GHOST FROM THE PAST

 

Het eerste dat we te horen krijgen zijn de 80’s geïnspireerde toetsen van Mikkel Henderson, op de voet gevolgd door de knappe riffs van de hand van kersverse gitarist Torben Enevoldsen. Het stemgeluid van Dagfinn is een ideale match bij deze melodieuze rock. Alle nummers bevatten catchy melodieën, kractige vocalen en vooral voortreffelijk gitaarwerk. Maar de rol van de toetsen valt ook niet te onderschatten! Ze bezorgen dit album een aangenaam vol geluid. “Seeds Of Terror” en “Fear Of The Stranger” bevatten beide zo’n killer openingsriff. Dagfinn laat enkele gemene uithalen horen in de het snelle “Seeds Of Terror”. Het trio bestaande uit die goddelijke gitaar, de verfrissende toetsen en de sterke vocale prestatie maken elk nummer tot een knaller. De bas van ‘oudgediende’ Pete Steiner laat van zich horen in de break van 3fear Of The Stranger”. “At The End Of The Day” bevat een commerciëler refrein en 3all That I Want” voert je terug naar de golden 80’s met een keysintro dat doet denken aan het vlottere Van Halen werk. “Follow Your Heart” is een ballade met in eerste instantie  een hoofdrol voor de toetsen. Ook krijgen we een onbekende vrouwenstem te horen. Geleidelijk aan komt de gitaar meer naar voren tijdens deze romantische trip. “Daddy’s Girl” is een typische Scandinavische AOR –rocker en huisvest een heerlijke keyboardsolo. “Moving On” bezit een donkerder gitaargeluid, maar tegelijkertijd zijn ook heerlijk melodieuze licks te horen! “Murder” kent een groovy drive en herbergt zelfs een old school orgel en wordt door ondergetekende tot beste track benoemd! “I Believe In Rock N Roll” is een arenarocker pur sang en bevat de nodige hey-hey-hey’s op de achtergrond. Het pompende “The Other Side” sluit dit geweldige album af.

Conclusie
Dit nieuwe album van het herboren Fate heeft me aangenaam verrast. Het combineert het catchy aspect van het “A Matter Of Attitude” album met het voortreffelijk gitaarwerk van “Scratch N Sniff”. Laat dit nu toevallig mijn favoriete Fate albums zijn. Dus, samengevat krijg je met dit album ‘the best of both worlds’ te horen. Dus de albumtitel “Ghosts From The Past” dekt meer dan de lading, me dunkt!

Hi Jack, how is life at the moment?
Hi to everyone at Livereviewer.com nice talking to you Ronald, in answer to the question life is good and I am enjoying the wonderful reaction to the new album

For the people living under a rock , can you tell us a little bit about Jack Starr’s Burning Starr?
Well it’s a band that plays power metal and is not ashamed of its past or of sounding like the albums we all grew up and in my case of sounding like the old albums that I made with Burning Starr so many years ago

 

The record got great reviews and the fans seems to love it. How do you feel about the album?
I have a great feeling every time I listen to Land of the Dead and I have not gotten tired of it so for me that is a good thing, I really believe that it is a great album and I hope that more and more people will hear it including people that have never heard of Burning Starr . I  hope we can reach them and they can say to themselves ‘ I like this and I want to hear more” or maybe they could say “ Who are these guys ,how come I never heard of them” I would like this album to gain converts I would love to see Burning Starr leave its cult status and become a very well known band and I hope this album can do it, There is a saying that “ From great struggle comes great art” and I can say that this album was very difficult to make and it involved seven recording studios, re recording many of the tracks and learning a lot about how to make an album that would appeal to a new generation of metal fans and for that I have to thank Bart Gabriel for his excellent production work and his vision of how this new Burning Starr album should sound.

Bart was able to bring us into a new world of big powerful sounds but without sacrificing the intensity and passion that Burning Starr albums are known for and with the help of Mariusz Pietka of MP studios he was able to make the most powerful album in the history of Burning Starr, Land of the Dead can hold its own with any album that is out today and what is important to me is that the sounds are honest, there is no fake drums or sampling ,even the amazing choirs that you hear in a song like “Twilight of the Gods“ was done by our very gifted singer Todd Micheal Hall

Many metal bands today use samples of choirs that can be programmed from a keyboard Burning Starr used a singer who knows how to layer his voice and create choir effects much in the same way as the late Freddy Mercury did on the Queen recordings, the chorus of “Never Again“ is breathtaking and once again Todd is layering his voice perfectly and this song is made even more amazing by the rock solid bass playing of Ned Meloni who is getting wonderful reviews for his bass playing and his sound, and of course I could not talk about Land of the Dead without mentioning  Kenny Earl aka Rhino whose drumming breathes power and might . When Rhino plays drums whether it be with Manowar or Burning Starr he plays with great skill and authority and gives the album a massive foundation on which to build on

 

If you compare Land of the Dead to Defiance it seems this time it’s more up tempo.
From where this decision?I think that there was a conscious decision to make Land of the Dead rock harder than the last album Defiance which some people thought was a little too controlled , On this album Ned and I wanted to unleash everyone, We wanted to hear Rhino play with more abandon and more fills and drum intros, we wanted Todd to sing more intense with more screams and emotion and more vocals even during lead solos in the way that Robert Plant and Jimmy Page would sometime trade off  in the middle of a song, This album features more songwriting input from everyone and Ned brought some great up tempo songs with him to the table and they were all used ,songs like “When Blood and Steel Collide“ and “Here We Are ,Warning Fire“ were all heavily embedded with the stamp of our bass player Ned who likes to play a lot of up tempo songs and so does Rhino so this ended up being the direction of the album and I am very happy that we went down that road

Land of the Dead got a great production, can you tell us a bit about how the recording went?
The production on Land of the Dead was done first with the tracking of the songs here in the U.S by Robert Barbour at his studio and by Rhino at his studio, and even before that in a small studio in Melbourne by Marcus, the lead guitar tracks were done at my home with Rhino bringing his recording equipment over, the drums were rerecorded first in one studio and then again at the Zone in Melbourne and around that time Bart started to oversee the production and the tracks were done again and finally mixed and mastered at MP studios in Poland and while all this was happening we were in touch with the boss of Limb Music who had very specific ideas on what he wanted to hear .Bart was able to take all the tracks from different studios and stir them in a big pot and make very delicious soup!!

The artwork from Land of Dead is very awesome, who is responsible for it?
Ken Kelly once again has shown the world that he is the master at this kind of art and for the cover of Land of the Dead, we feel that Ken has done an amazing job at bringing the story of Land of the Dead to life, when I was young I remember buying the album Rainbow Rising and looking at that cover for hours and hours while I listened to the great music of songs like Stargazer, I never imagined that one day this great artist would do an album cover for my band, I can truly say that it is a great honor and also I would like to say that Limb music has made a truly wonderful album package with a 16 page color booklet, filled with lyrics, thanks and a lot of information, this whole album is a very high quality release and I feel very proud to be a part of it

 

Rhino is pounding the drums on the record,  where did this collaboration started ?
The collaboration with Rhino started about five years ago, when we met both me and my bass player Ned were very impressed with his drumming when we saw him play with his previous band Holy Hell we talked to him and realized that we shared many of the same influences and even more important was the fact that he is a truly humble and down to earth guy who just happens to plays fantastic drums! We asked if he could help us lay some tracks down for a demo we were doing and it sounded so good that we asked him to do the whole album and five years later we are still working together and we are all good friends

Which band while being a kid made so much impression that you decided to play guitar?
I think that for me it would have to be hearing the first Led Zeppelin album or maybe an album by Ten Years After called Going Home, another great inspiration for me was the first solo album by Jeff Beck which is called Truth, I wanted to be able to make the sounds that Jeff made on that album

Which gear do you use?
I use ESP guitars and Marshall amps, I also use a Fender strat and Ned uses ESP basses as well

Jack you where in Virgin Steel, how do you look back at that period in your life?
Virgin Steele was a wonderful period in my life full of musical discovery and filled with the joy of creating metal anthems that have lasted even now thirty years later!! 

How is it to be back on stage now with Burning Starr?
It is a great feeling to be on stage with Burning Starr and see my band mates and know that they are next to me kicking ass and putting on a great show, they never let me down and I try to do the same because every show is important no matter how big or small the crowd we play like our lives depend on it because they do and this is the life we have chosen so we take it seriously  (but still have fun doing it )

Can we in Holland looking forward to a show in the near future?
Holland is one of the countries that has given our band great support and we are very grateful for this so of course when we come to Europe we will make every effort to come there and meet with our friends and supporters and let our metal brothers and sisters know that we could not be there without their help, our manager Bart Gabriel is talking to promoters in different countries we would like Holland to be one of the countries we play in.

Now that the record is out what else is down the pipeline for the band?
What is coming is playing the music from Land of the Dead live in concert and putting on great shows and starting work on the next album, we want to continue the great momentum that was started by Land of the Dead,  So thanks for letting me talk about the album and Keep the Metal Burning , Jack Starr 2012

INTERVIEWER RONALD VAN DE BAAN 

Met al een groot aantal albums op hun naam, en een nieuwe onderweg is Epica zeker niet de minste band. Dit zestal timmert hard aan de weg in binnen en buitenland. Concertkaarten gaan dan ook als warme broodjes over de toonbank. En dat is niet zo verwonderlijk met deze melodieuze metal waar de engelenstem van Simone Simons zich doorheen mengt. Ook live is de band indrukwekkend te noemen. Gelukkig had piano en synthesizer held Coen Janssen even tijd voor ons om een paar vragen te beantwoorden:

 

 

Ten eerste bedankt voor het interview. Hoe gaat het ermee?
Het gaat prima, we hebben het lekker druk met het afwerken en de promotie van het nieuwe album en gelukkig zijn de reacties van de pers positief. Als band in Nederland in deze tijd mogen we absoluut niet klagen. We zijn van alle bands in Nederland momenteel de band met de meeste optredens in het buitenland en staan daarom in hetzelfde rijtje als Armin van Buuren en Tiesto als het gaat om bekendheid in het buitenland! Er staat ook een mooie tour in het verschiet voor het nieuwe album dus wat wil je nog meer?!?

Er is een nieuw album op komst. Kunnen jullie een beschrijving geven van de nummers? Wat is het verschil met voorgaande albums?
De nummers en de muziek liggen in het verlengde van onze laatste plaat "Design Your Universe". Met Isaac Delahaye hebben we sindsdien een geweldige gitarist in de gelederen en daardoor zijn de gitaarpartijen dit keer nog bruter en gevarieerder! Alle Epica ingrediënten zijn weer van de partij, heftige stukken, lyrische stukken, koor, orkest, blastbeats en ga zo maar door, alles overgoten met het Simone-sausje! Ik denk dat bij deze plaat alles nog beter op elkaar is afgestemd en dat we onze stijl hebben geperfectioneerd. Maar natuurlijk moet iedereen lekker zelf gaan luisteren en bepalen wat de verschillen zijn!

Wat heeft jullie geïnspireerd bij het maken van dit album?
Qua thematiek gaat het dit keer over de keuzes die jezelf maakt. Mensen hebben de neiging zomaar klakkeloos te volgen wat er op TV verteld wordt en niet meer zelf na te denken. Dit zorgt ervoor dat er steeds meer problemen komen in de wereld. Denk aan de financiële crisis en de Arabische lente. Het is nu de tijd dat men zelf weer gaat nadenken en tot de juiste conclusies komt anders mis je de boot en ben je verloren. Het is duidelijk dat er van alles staat te veranderen, dus kun je niet meekomen dan is dit je "Requiem for the Indifferent"

Muzikaal gezien zijn er zoveel verschillende invloeden die onze muziek maken wat het is. Van klassiek tot death-metal je kan het zo gek niet bedenken.

 

 

Wat vinden jullie het belangrijkste bij het maken van muziek?
Dat is voor alle leden verschillend. Ikzelf vind het belangrijk dat er een goede groove in het nummer zit en dat er goede melodieën gebruikt worden die aanstekelijk zijn. Natuurlijk moet het wel metal blijven en proberen we niet bewust een "hit" te schrijven zoals sommige andere bands doen.

Wat zijn jullie ervaringen als muzikant in Nederland?
Als muzikant mag je blij zijn dat je in Nederland woont. Er heerst hier een goed klimaat en er is voldoende ruimte om jezelf te ontwikkelen. Elke stad en elk dorp heeft wel een muziekschool, concertzaal of oefenruimtes dus kansen genoeg. Je hoeft maar over de grens te gaan en je leert dat dit in andere landen niet vanzelfsprekend is. Zelfs in het "beloofde land" Amerika, is het vele malen moeilijker om iets voor elkaar te krijgen omdat er gewoon minder faciliteiten zijn. 

Helaas is het nog maar de vraag of het zo blijft omdat het huidige kabinet alleen maar wil snijden in cultuur. Natuurlijk gaat dat als eerste ten koste van de beginners omdat die het het moeilijkst hebben. Maar dan heb je wel de perfecte samenleving voor Henk en Ingrid, die alleen maar naar het Tros-piratenfestijn luisteren!

 

Jullie zijn in het buitenland ook erg bekend. Wat is jullie van een tour in het buitenland het meest bijgebleven?
Het is te gek dat we overal komen en dat we van alles kunnen zien wat andere mensen niet altijd zien, of waar ze heel ver voor moeten reizen. Sowieso komen we in landen die je zelf niet 1,2,3 zou bezoeken. Het belangrijkste daarvan is dat je leert hoe anders het er in andere delen van de wereld aan toe gaat. Als je dan weer in Nederland terugkomt dan merk je dat er veel te veel geklaagd wordt over nutteloze dingen en dat we omkomen in de luxeproblemen. 

Hoe omschrijven jullie een live optreden van Epica. Wat willen jullie overdragen aan het publiek?
Een Epica liveshow staat voor een dikke portie metal met een hoog entertainment gehalte. Zelf proberen we er altijd een feestje van te maken. We hebben tenslotte de beste baan van de wereld en dat zullen de mensen weten ook! Hoe cool is het dat je tijdens je werk een biertje kan drinken terwijl je de muziek maakt die je tof vindt en dat mensen dan ook nog eens voor je klappen?!?

Met welke muzikanten willen jullie graag nog eens samenwerken?
Die lijst is zo lang.... we hebben natuurlijk al een aantal coole samenwerkingen gedaan maar er zijn altijd wel inspirerende artiesten waarmee we iets zouden willen opnemen. Echter hebben we dit album gekozen om buiten het koor, geen andere mensen als gast op de plaat te zetten. We wilden het dit keer eens op eigen kracht proberen.

Willen jullie nog iets speciaals doorgeven aan onze lezers? 
Bedankt voor de interesse en hopelijk zien we jullie allemaal ergens "on the road" Het album verschijnt de 9e Maart en het wordt spectaculair aan het publiek  gepresenteerd in 013 Tilburg op 16 Maart. Het is wel al zo goed als uitverkocht dus hopelijk zijn er nog kaarten als dit interview online verschijnt!!
